Vehicle Assessment
The occupational therapist will assess the suitability of your existing vehicle for your medical condition, injury, disability or age-related changes.
Suitable vehicle modifications may be discussed and recommended for your vehicle. One outcome may be a mobility van option, for some wheelchair drivers or passengers. Or perhaps you need vehicle modifications for your car so you can drive safely and independently for example, with hand controls.
You may need modifications to travel as a passenger. Wheelchair and transportation of large items of disability equipment need to be considered too.
Low Volume Vehicle Technical Authority (LVVTA) NZ vehicle modification certification standards are met.
A learner driver licence is the minimum requirement for a vehicle assessment.

Can I get funding?
For vehicle assessment and vehicle modifications, you may be eligible for Disability Support Services (DSS) and/or Lottery funding. Or you may be eligible for ACC funding for a 'Transport for Independence Assessment' to determine your transportation needs.

What can I expect from a vehicle assessment?
1. Assessment, this may include trialling modification options. The service has a modified car in Christchurch you can trial driving in a safe off road environment with a selection of different modifications that can be chosen to best meet your needs. For other locations arrangements may be made to trial a modified vehicle.
2. Select a suitable vehicle
3. Install vehicle modifications
4. Driver training and lessons, if required
5. Sign-off Assessment, e.g. at a Christchurch vehicle modifiers or at your home.
6. Drive safely and independently, in comfort and with ease
